Google Maps Can Be Used in Excel Spreadsheets Converted for the Web

Use Google maps in spreadsheets converted to web format to show object or store locations. The maps are live and can be adjusted using formulas in the spreadsheet, or by the user.

April 11, 2014 — SpreadsheetConverter is an add-on to Microsoft Excel that lets you convert spreadsheets to live web pages. The new version 7.5 recently became available at

Version 7.5 introduces the ability to display maps in a web calculator or smart form using a new Google Map widget. Using settings in the spreadsheet, the developer can dynamically select the center location for the map and its zoom level. Any number of named markers can be positioned precisely on the map.

“Nothing can compare with a map when providing location information. The Google map is the industry standard and you can now use it in your spreadsheet to provide dynamic location information in your calculating web page”, says Anna Winter, sales manager for SpreadsheetConverter.

The new Google Map widget can be used with complete geographical coordinates expressed as decimal values for longitude and latitude, e.g. “40.7308696,-73.9976058”. For convenience, you can also use any short-hand text reference supported by Google Maps, e.g. “Washington Square Park, New York, USA”. This allows for many different types of applications in a web page, including the ability to immediately show the location of a selected store, real estate object or building on the map.

Winter believes the geographical information is extra useful on a mobile device like a cell phone or tablet.

“The map is live and of course also includes your device’s own location. Providing a responsive map on your website makes it so much easier for your customers to find you”, she says.

The Google Map widget comes with a free Map Helper tool, a simple web app that lets the developer find the appropriate center location for the map, tailor the zoom level and place the necessary markers on the map.

SpreadsheetConverter is available for free trial at It creates web pages that are completely standalone, do not use Excel and run on all web servers. You only need Excel and the Spreadsheet Converter add-on for the actual conversion from spreadsheet to web page format. There is a one-time fee for the conversion program, with no extra fees per page, user or server. You may use the program and the web pages it creates for as long as you like. Full versions start at $127.
